Google VP describes the perfect search engine

Last month, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said during the company’s earnings call that Google had implemented about 120 search quality improvements during the third quarter, as the company moves toward its ultimate goal: “We want to get to the perfect search engine.”
No one asked him to elaborate on that lofty goal, so when IDG News Service recently had a chance to interview Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of Search Products and User Experience, we promptly asked her to explain what Schmidt meant. She also talked about what keeps Google ahead on search, how the company views semantic technology and what’s next in its Universal Search efforts to combine links to a variety of file types — news articles, images, videos, books, maps — in a single results list.Read more at computerworld.co.nz

Google is getting into the music business.
Google plans to make it easier for users to access music online by integrating song preview and purchase links into its search index.
Users who enter music-related queries — not only song names but partial song lyrics — will be presented with a list of relevant songs from Google partners MySpace and LaLa. Clicking on a song in the search results list will play a song preview and provide a link to buy and download the song.

According to Google, two of the top ten queries in the U.S. since 2004 are music-related.

Google Insights Forecasts the Future

Google Insights for Search includes a new forecasting feature that can extrapolate a search term’s future popularity based on its past performance.

For search terms with a lot of historical data, Google Insights for Search can project a likely trend. It’s not a perfect prediction of what’s to come, but it may be useful in certain circumstances.

Google has also added an animated map that allows users to see how search query volume changes over time in specific geographic regions.

Google drills deeper into search results

SAN FRANCISCO - Google has enhanced its popular internet search engine to dig deeper into pages to uncover the exact tidbits of information people seek.

“We’ve enhanced the search snippet with two new features that make it easier to find information buried deep within a page,” Chris Kern of Google’s Snippet Team wrote in a blog post.

The refined snippets let searchers “jump” to information they want instead of having to scour websites listed in results, according to Google.
